Title: Transmission of Maize B-3ld(ig) Telemere in Tripsacum Cytoplasm

Technical Abstract: An intergeneric Tripsacum x maize hybrid developed in 1996 was subjected to a series of backcrosses to maize. The BC3, BC4 and BC5 generations were backcrossed by an indeterminate gametophyte (ig) maintainer having 20 normal maize chromosomes and one additional telecentic B-3Ld chromosome. Transmission of the B-3Ld chromosome in maize has been reported to be less than 3% through pollen. With random transmission through pollen, a 21 maiz chromosome plus one telocentric B-3Ld individual backcrossed to the ig maintainer, 20+1, should give a ratio of 1:2:1 of 20, 21 and 22 chromosome progeny. We obtained a 1:20:1 ratio of 20, 21 and 22 chromosome progeny in our BC3 and BC4 generations which indicate preferential transmission of the B-3Ld telocentric chromosome in the Tripsacum cytoplasm.
