Technical Abstract: The goal of this research was to formulate news, sheetfed, and heatset inks in the absence of petroleum products. News ink vehicles were prepared by the polymerization of vegetable oils. By controlling the polymerization conditions, the desired viscosity, color, and molecular weight was achieved for a variety of vegetable oils having a broad range of iodine value and fatty acid composition. Polymerized vegetable oil was mixed with monoester of an unsaturated fatty acid or a blend of unsaturated fatty acid monoesters for sheetfed and heatset ink formulations. Physical properties and performance of these inks meet or exceed the industry standards. Biodegradation and volatile organic chemicals emission evaluation results showed the superiority of vegetable oil based inks over petroleum resin based inks. U.S. Patent (5,122,188) has been granted for news ink formulations and U.S. Patent (5,713,990) has been granted for sheetfed and heatset ink formulations.
