Title: TOWARD A GENETIC, PHYSICAL, AND DATABASE RESOURCE FOR MAIZE

Technical Abstract: The Missouri Maize Project is titled "Comprehensive Genetic, Physical, and Database Resource for Maize." The goal of this project is to develop a unified genetic resource for maize. An integrated physical and genetic map of the maize genome, associated with efficient marker tools and informatics systems, is necessary for basic and applied science. This will be initiated by preparation of a 10x maize BAC library, and fingerprinting accompanied by anchoring with an array of markers (selected RFLPs and ESTs, plus SSRs that will be developed as a part of the project). The markers will be mapped on high-resolution mapping populations, and radiation hybrids are to be developed to help construct the maps. In all cases the results (the map) and the reagents (the sequences, the scores, the mapping populations, and the markers) will be made available to the scientific community at large. Advancement of this project will take major steps toward understanding the structure and function of the genomes of maize an other cereal crops, and will enable gene discovery, studies of gene functions, comparative genomics, and discovery of new and useful variations in crops, among other opportunities. The information and resources that result will contribute to basic research, to the corn industry, and ultimately, to US consumers.
