Technical Abstract: This book chapter reviews the extensive literature on salmonellosis in animals. The work contains sections on salmonellosis in dogs, cats, horses, cattle, chickens, turkeys, and swine. While emphasis is on the disease state in each individual species, the implications for public health are discussed. For example, dogs and cats may be reservoirs of salmonellae within a household. Salmonellosis in cattle may be a source of human illness if the organism is present in either the meat or dairy products produced from an infected cow. Prevention of salmonellosis in animals is discussed with respect to hygiene, farm and processing management, and animal vaccination. The chapter contains a large number of relatively recent citations and should serve as a reference and resource text for anyone working on problems associated with the control of salmonellosis in animal populations.
