Title: LABORATORY RESISTANCE OF VARROA TO FLUVALINATE IN THE U.S.

Technical Abstract: The pyrethroid acaricide fluvalinate (Apistan) is the only legal compound registered for use in controlling Varroa jacobsoni in honey bee hives. Recent commercial beekeepers' concerns about decreased efficacy prompted us to initiate a survey of fluvalinate resistance in Varroa in different regions of the U.S. After extensive laboratory testing we found very high resistance in Florida, moderate resistance in California, and no resistance in Texas. From these results we can conclude that resistance is real in Varroa, and that new chemistries of compounds need to be registered for Varroa control.
