Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The small hive beetle, Aethina tumida Murray, is a recently introduced pest of honey bee hives into the U.S., with confirmed reports in three eastern states. All knowledge about the biology of this pest is from studies conducted in South Africa, its native point of origin. We provide in this abstract preliminary results of small hive beetle biology in the U.S. Information is given on feeding preferences, host attractants, and propensity to attack U.S. hives.
