Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Many of the items discussed in the introduction to the first edition remain true more than 30 years later. Although the literature on propagule germination has grown, questions associated with that type of study generally remain the same. Inconsistencies in seed handling and storage, incomplete descriptions of seed sources and storage conditions, and unknown seed age continue to confound results and make comparisons among studies difficult. Because of this and the inherent variability in weedy species, readers will find conflicting results for many species. We made no attempt to resolve these inconsistencies. Our intention was not to present a complete review of the literature on weed propagule germination, establishment, and germination procedures. Our goal was simply to survey the literature for information that may have become available since the first edition of this text on the propagation of weedy plant species was published. In the course of updating the book, more than 500 references and 60 weed species were added. No attempt was made to establish priority of findings. New references that simply confirmed information already presented were generally not added. In some instances, literature was cited as other references rather than being included in the discussion. For a literature review directs the reader to papers that, in our opinion, deserved highlighting because they contained a great number of literature citations on several aspects of the species.
