Technical Abstract: Our project, the Walnut Creek Nitrogen Initiative, addresses one of the most prevalent environmental issues of the Midwest, nitrate (N03) contamination of tile drainage waters. Non-point source pollution resulting from agricultural nitrogen (N) fertilizer use is a major contributor to this problem and has been identified as a major cause of hypoxia in the Gulf of Mexico. The project goal is to determine if an N fertilizer best management practice has potential for reducing N03 contamination of tile drainage waters, while optimizing profitability. Results to date of water quality, crop yield, and N rates and costs will be presented.
