A genetic map of soybean consisting of 20 linkage groups with over 600 Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) loci integrated with more than 500 RFLP is completed. The SSR markers, their map positions in three populations, an estimate of gene diversity, and their PCR primer sequences are available. This set of markers and their map positions provide the basis for the selection of sub-sets of loci that can be used for cultivar identification/Plant Variety Protection, the analysis of genetic diversity, pedigree analysis, quantitative trait locus discovery, identification of Bacterial Artificial Chromosome clones, and the discovery of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms. SSR allele sizing using fluorescently labeled PCR products analyzed on a DNA sequencer permits the multiplex analysis of up to 12 loci in a single lane with 64 lanes per gel allowing the genotyping of a large number of individuals.
