Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The first Trifolium conference was held in 1961 in Madison, WI as a red clover improvement conference in conjunction with the Annual Meetings of the North Central Branch of the American Society of Agronomy. The first few conferences were conducted as "work or research" conferences and held basically at a three year interval. The fifth conference (1976) held in Pennsylvania had the first formal agenda, and conferences were still held on a three year interval. Beginning in 1982, the conference participants agreed to convene the conference every two years. No formal bylaws have been developed; however, a formal business meeting is held at each conference to elect a secretary-treasurer for the next conference and to discuss concerns of mutual interest of the participants. The secretary- treasurer will succeed as chairman for the following conference. The conference chairman and participants have appointed numerous sub-committees sover the years to carry out specific responsibilities on issues of importance as declared by the conference participants. In 1982, the Clover and Special Purpose Legume Crop Germplasm Committee (Crop Advisory Committee) was established by the participants of the conference to act as an advisory committee to the National Plant Germplasm System. The fifteenth conference was held in June, 1998 in Madison, WI.
