Technical Abstract: Electricity generation from biomass is becoming an increasingly popular option. Pilot studies have indicated that alfalfa stems are a suitable feedstock for energy generation by the gasification process. Long-term viability of this sustainable option is dependent on developing sound strategies for management of the ash produced. Detailed information on characteristics of the ash are required to develop such strategies. Fly ash from gasification of alfalfa stems was characterized with respect to organic and inorganic constituents. The concentrations of total dioxins and total furans were below the detection limits of 0.6 and 0.4 ug/kg, respectively. Analysis of inorganic constituents indicated that the concentrations of Pb, As, Cd, Co, and Se were low. Fly ash was approximately 40% C, 90-120 g/kg K, and 8-10 g/kg P. These results indicate that alfalfa stem gasification ash can potentially be utilized as an agriculturally beneficial soil amendment.
