Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Species-specificity and cross-reactivity of chicken monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) developed against Eimeria acervulina (EA) sporozoites were determined by Western blotting analysis using the sporozoites of seven different avian Eimeria species such as EA, E. brunetti (EB), E. maxima (EM), E. mitis, E. necatrix (EN), E. praecox (EP) and E. tenella (ET). Five different mAbs showed similar reactivity on the apical complex of the sporozoite. However, in this study, using sonicated sporozoites of the seven Eimeria species as antigen, all mAbs (except one) recognized multiple bands. One of the mAbs, 8E-1 recognized multiple bands in all Eimeria species that were examined. MAbs HE-4 recognized the multiple bands of EA, EM, EN and ET; 8D-2 recognized the multiple bands of EA, EN and ET; 5D-11 recognized the multiple bands of EP, EA, EM, EB, EN and ET. One mAb, 8C-3, recognized only one band of EA. The predominant bands of mAbs had molecular weights of approximately 15, 32, 45 and 260 kilodaltons.
