Interpretive Summary: A thrips species new to science transmits a virus that cause a disease of zucchini squash in Sao Paulo State, Brazil. This type of virus known as tospovirus can be transmitted only by thrips and causes diseases that severely damage vegetable and floricultural crops. The new species named Frankliniella zucchinii belongs in a group of thrips that includes four other species that can transmit four different tospoviruses. The description and scientific name will enable workers in agriculture to recognize this pest and facilitate research, control and communication about the disease and the thrips.

Technical Abstract: Frankliniella zucchinii, new species, is described. It is a vector of a tospovirus causing zucchini lethal chlorotic disease of zucchini squash in Sao Paulo State, Brazil.
