Technical Abstract: Minor constituents such as fat soluble vitamins, phospholipids and plant sterols in lipid containing materials can be removed using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE). Supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) was utilized in this study to analyze carotenoids in soybean oil, phospholipids extracted from soybean oil by SFE, and plant sterols in vegetable oils. Both packed columns and capillary columns were investigated to optimize th analytical methods necessary for each type of compound. Other factors studied were type of column packing, temperature and pressure during SFC, and use of modifiers with supercritical carbon dioxide and their effect on the resultant separations. The benign conditions utilized by SFE and SFC proved to be effective for the analyses of these compounds without inducing degradation of the above analytes.
