Technical Abstract:
In humid areas of North America, the maintenance of herbicide- tree rows with a covery crop or sod alleyway for erosion control and to support vehicle travel has become the norm for tree fruit orchards. However, the continuous use of chemical herbicides has resulted in the evolution of resistant weeds, and presently over 100 weed species have been found to have resistance to at least one herbicide class. This article reviews herbicide-resistant weeds which have developed and may pose a problem in orchards, those registered herbicides at the greatest risk of having weeds develop resistance to them, and steps that growers can take to prevent herbicide-resistant weeds from evolving.
