Technical Abstract: The family Trichocomaceae contains the anamorphic genera Aspergillus, Penicillium, and Geosmithia, along with the teleomorphic genera connected to them. It also contains some less well known genera, such as Sagenomella. Geosmithia was created to contain brightly colored Penicillium spp. that produce cylindrical conidia from roughened phialides that have no collar. Geosmithia teleomorphic states are classified in Talaromyces. Sagenomella was created to contain Acremonium-like anamorphs and the teleomorphic state is similar to Talaromyces but placed in the separate genus Sagenoma. The teleomorphic state provides phenotypic justification for placement of Sagenoma in this family. Internal transcribed spacer regions 1 and 2, 5.8S rDNA and 28S rDNA sequences were determined from some species in the Trichocomaceae, and the out-group family Onygenaceae, to determine phylogenetic placement of Sagenoma. Parsimony analysis of the data show that although Sagenoma is brightly colored and produces an Acremonium anamorph, it is phylogenetically part of the genus Talaromyces whose species produce Penicillium or Geosmithia anamorphs. While recognizing distinct anamorphic types is useful for identification of isolates, phylogenetic classification requires that Sagenoma spp. be treated as members of the genus Talaromyces.
