Title: HYDROCEPHALUS ASSOCIATED WITH NEOSPORA CANINUM-INFECTION IN AN ABORTED BOVINE FETUS

Interpretive Summary: Neospora caninum is a recently recognized single-celled parasite of livestock. It causes abortion and neonatal mortality in cattle and other animals. Scientists at the Beltsville Agricultural Research Center and the University of Texas reported hydrocephalus (enlarged fluid-filled brain) in an aborted calf for the first time. This report will be of interest to pathologists, veterinarians and parasitologists.

Technical Abstract: This paper describes Neospora caninum-associated hydrocephalus in an aborted Hereford bovine fetus of 7 months' gestational age. Numerous tachyzoites were observed in areas of the cerebrum with lesions of non-suppurative necrotizing encephalitis.
