Technical Abstract:
Phylogenetic analysis based on gene 3 from bluetongue viruses previously indicated a geographical topotyping. Recent studies have indicated that the inner core proteins encoded by genes 3 and 7 are involved in infection of the insect vectors. In particular, the gene 7 product (VP7) is involved in insect cell surface binding. Perhaps certain protein sequences are preferred by the insect vector species present in a geographical location. This study compares the BTV gene 7 from several viral strains isolated in the Central American region to previously published gene 7 sequences from virus strains isolated in United States, South Africa and australia. In general, BTV gene 7 also displays geographical topotypes.
