Title: RELEASE OF THE FIRST RUST AND BEAN GOLDEN MOSAIC VIRUS RESISTANT SNAP BEAN GERMPLASM FOR THE UNITED STATES

Technical Abstract: Indeterminate (pole) snap bean germplasm lines, BelDade-Rust and Golden Mosaic Resistant -4, -5, and -6 that have pod and plant characteristics like the popular, gourmet, pole, snap bean cultivar McCaslan 42 are being released to breeders. McCaslan 42 is highly susceptible to bean rust, Uromyces appediculatus, and bean golden modaic virus (BGMV), but the lines being released are resistant to all 87 available races of the rust fungus and to BGMV. The lines were developed at Beltsville by pedigree breeding, screening with appropriate races of the rust fungus, and with a polymerase chain reaction-random amplified polymorphic DNA marker for the bgm-1 gene for BGMV resistance. These releases are homozygous for this gene and for an unnamed locus from cultivar Mexico 235, as well as the Ur-3 and Ur-4 genes for rust resistance. BGMV resistance was confirmed in Puerto Rico and Homestead. Field selections for McCaslan characteristics were made in the Homestead area.
