Interpretive Summary: Grasses are naturally infected with a close group of fungi that confer a large number of enhanced characteristics to the grass. RRC scientists discovered the cause of livestock toxicity in grasses. This discovery lead to the development of several other important features of grasses infected with these fungi. Among these enhanced features are the elaboration of livestock toxins that serve to deter animal grazing. These fungi also enhance drought tolerance to their grass hosts. This work has lead to the development of two international symposia dealing with various aspects of this fungus-grass association: International Acremonium/Grass Interactions. The fungus was very recently renamed by an RRC scientist and his student to Neotyphodium, therefore the name of this symposium was changed. The 3rd International Neotyphodium/Grass Symposium was held here in Athens on the University of Georgia's campus. The symposium consisted of over 100 scientists and their students from Argentina, New Zealand, England, Australia, France, Germany, Spain, India, and the United States. This is a book on the proceedings of this conference, co-edited by RRC scientist. The book will be published by Plenum Press, New York, and should be available in 1997, late August or early September.
