Tachinid flies are highly important in biological control programs as they are primary parasites of other insects, especially moths and beetles. Knowledge of the systematics of the family is very poor, resulting in hundreds of undescribed species. In this paper the North American genus Pararchytas is revised, describing one new species from the southwestern U.S. and Mexico. Maps, a key to species, and illustrations to aid in identifications are presented in the paper. This information will be used by scientists, IPM managers, and regulatory personnel charged with identifying insects. Technical Abstract: The genus Pararchytas is revised. A new species is described, A. apache (type locality: New Mexico, Grant Co., Cherry Creek campground, 14 mi. N of Silver City, 7400 feet). A key to the three known species, diagnostic descriptions, distribution maps, and illustrations are provided. |
