Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Four large, undisturbed, monolith lysimeters (8.1 m**2 surface area) were used in a multi-year study of NO3 and Br leaching under a corn/soybean rotation. Rye was grown for a winter cover crop following soybeans. Lysimeter surfaces were chisel-plowed in the spring, and N was surface applied as urea after tillage. Two lysimeters received 140 kg N/ha and two olysimeters received 196 kg N/ha at the beginning of the corn year. The same rates of Br were applied on the corresponding lysimeters at the same time as the N application. Nitrate-N and Br concentrations in the percolate and percolate quantities from these 2.4 m-deep lysimeters were measured weekly. Concentrations of these constituents varied seasonally with the greatest amounts being moved during the late winter/early spring. In this paper, comparisons of chemical concentrations and transport will be made between the corn and soybean years, NO3-N and Br, and the two application rates.
