Title: MOLLENINES A AND B: NEW DIOXOMORPHOLINES FROM THE ASCOTROMATA OF EUPENICILLIUM MOLLE

Interpretive Summary: Fungal survival structures called ascostromata have been examined as a source of novel biologically active chemicals of particular interest to the fields of agriculture and medicine for their biological activities and potential commercial application(s). This paper describes two novel chemicals possessing a new ring system that we have named 'mollenines'. One of these chemicals, mollenine A, exhibited moderate cytotoxicty in the National Cancer Institute's 60-tumor cell line panel and moderate antibacterial activity.

Technical Abstract: Two new dioxomorpholines have been isolated from the sclerotioid ascostromata of Eupenicillium molle (NRRL 13062). Their structures were determined by analysis of NMR data. Mollenine A exhibited moderate cytotoxicity and antibacterial activity, but neither compound displays significant antiinsectan activity.
