Technical Abstract: We have constructed a molecular map in cotton and have identified locations of QTLs for the fiber quality properties, by use of F2 progeny from an interspecific cross between two improved cottons, G. hirsutum L. acc. TM-1 and G. barbadense L. acc. 3-79. Presented here is a framework map consisting primarily of RFLP and RAPD markers among 152 F2 individuals. These 268 loci are assembled into 34 linkage groups and cover 3528 cM of the cotton genome. About one half of the linkage groups have been assigned to their respective genomic origin (A vs. D) or chromosomal identity (1 through 26) by use of diploid and aneuploid cottons. With both MapMaker/QTL and regression analysis, we have detected 2 QTLs for bundle fiber strength and 3 QTLs for fiber length in different linkage groups. These QTLs explain about 40% to 50% of variance to fiber characteristics in the F2 population. Further characterization of these QTLs is underway using recombinant inbred lines of the same mapping individuals.
