Technical Abstract: For over 10 years Russian wheat aphid (RWA), Diuraphis noxia (Mordvilko), has been a serious pest of barley in intermountain regions of the western United States. USDA barley germplasm lines resistant to RWA as seedlings in the greenhouse have yet to be tested for resistance under field conditions with exposure to RWA throughout the growing season. Fifteen barley germplasm lines with varying levels of seedling resistance and four susceptible cultivars were planted at two locations for 2 years in Wyoming and artificially infested with RWA at approximately the three-leaf state. Noninfested controls were kept aphid-free by repeated applications of insecticide. The effect of RWA feeding on grain yield, yield components, and malting quality were measured. In terms of agronomics, resistant lines were not significantly affected by RWA, while moderately resistant lines varied in their reaction to RWA feeding, and moderately susceptible and susceptible barleys were significantly and negatively affected by RWA. The malting quality of all lines appeared to be negatively affected by RWA feeding.
