Technical Abstract: Incubation of manure amended soil is frequently utilized to evaluate manure N and C availability. An experiment was designed to determine suitable methods of manure sample storage. Dairy slurries were collected and seven treatments (fresh, frozen (4 wk), refrigerated (1 d, 1 wk, 4 wk), freeze and oven dried) were compared for effects on C and N mineralization. Rates and extents of N and C mineralization were determined by incubation of manure- amended soil at 25 degrees celcius. The appearance of NH4 plus NH3 and the production of CO2 were monitored over 16 wk. Refrigeration or freezing had no effect on manure N content, however freeze and oven drying resulted in large losses of N (50%). Soil N mineralization-immobilization-turnover was not affected by freezing or refrigerating the manures. However, oven and freeze dried manures had greater immobilization of N when compared with fresh manure. Results indicate that oven or freeze drying are unsuitable methods of storage, but freezing and refrigeration of manure samples are s satisfactory.
