Technical Abstract: Although we have detailed information about fertilizer use on annual crops, little is known about how farmers manage nutrients on perennial forage crops. Minnesota dairy farmers were polled by mail to determine what nutrient management practices they use and from whom they obtain information on nutrient requirements. Information on commercial fertilizer rand manure use, rates, and timing was collected. Valid response rate was 35%. Categories were established for all variables and stepwise logistic regression was used to determine significant relationships. More than 60% of respondents reported that they use soil test results; fertilizer dealers are the most frequently relied upon source to interpret soil tests. Very high soil P and K tests indicated that improved nutrient management approaches are needed.
