Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: This booklet serves as the proceedings of a conference held in Athens, GA on 13-16 April 1997. The conference was sponsored by the Soil and Water Conservation Society, Soil Science Society of America, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, USDA-Agricultural Research Service, Tennessee Valley Authority, Cooperative Research Education Extension and Economic Services, Monsanto, US-Environmental Protection Agency, and Conservation Technology Information Center. Participants from 25 states and 3 countries gathered to listen to five plenary sessions, to engage in three poster sessions, and to discuss critical issues concerning sustainability of watersheds in four break-out groups. The goals of the conference were to: (1) provide a forum for research scientists, land owners, agricultural advisors, policy makers, and others to discuss issues surrounding the topic ecosystem dynamics at the watershed level and (2) identify research, information, program, and policy needs at local, regional, national, and international levels to support this approach to land management. A White Paper that synthesizes the conference findings into a research agenda appropriate for watershed-level activities will be forthcoming.
