Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Cattle persistently infected (PI) with bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV) suffer increased rates of mortality compared to noninfected animals. This report describes detection of PI feedlot cattle and provides serological data about these cattle and penmates. Four hundred sixty-nine yearling, Angus-Longhorn cross, steers and heifers were placed in two feedlots, with 55 steers in one pen at one feedlot and 180 steers and 234 heifers in two pens at a second feedlot. The cattle were progeny of 2-year-old, first-calf heifers from one ranch. The pen of 55 steers received a modified-live IBR-BVD-PI3 (NADL Strain BVDV) vaccine. Morbidity rates in the pens of cattle were 18.2%, 3.3%, and 5.6% while mortality rates were 14.5%, 0%, and 3.0%. Sera collected near slaughter from the 47 steers in one pen and at slaughter from 137 of 180 steers and 225 heifers marketed in the other pens. The percentage of PI cattle in each pen identified by microtiter virus isolation was 6.4% (3/47), 5.8% (8/137), and 5.3% (12/225). Virus isolated from in the group of 47 cattle was a Type 2 BVDV. Serum neutralization tests for BVDV done on the 47 steers had a mean titer of 1:469 (geometric mean titer of 1:322) for PI cattle and 1:531 (geometric mean titer of 1:277) for microtiter negative cattle. The 8 PI cattle in the second pen had a mean titer of 1:848 (geometric mean titer of 1:609). The 12 PI cattle in the third pen had a mean titer of 1:277 (geometric mean titer of 1:85), while microtiter negative cattle had a mean titer of 1:351 (geometric titer of 1:157). Titers ranged from 1:16 to 1:2048 in PI cattle and from 1:2 to 1:4096 in microtiter negative animals.
