Interpretive Summary: The USDA-ARS small fruit breeding program in Corvallis, Oregon is making progress to develop new cultivars for the Pacific Northwest. The primary emphasis is on blackberry and strawberry cultivars. The strawberry genotypes ORUS 1077-47 and ORUS 1076-126 will be released as late ripening cultivars. While these two are well suited to processing, their ripening season suggests that they will primarily be of value to homeowners, roadside markets, and pick-your-own operations geared to the fresh market. ORUS 1267-236 and ORUS 1267-250 are suitable for the processed market and are currently being grown in grower trials. `Black Butte' trailing blackberry was released in 1996 as a fresh market berry. It has fruit 50- 100% larger than `Marion' with comparable yields. ORUS 830-4 will be released in 1997 as a dual purpose berry, particularly suited to the fresh market. ORUS 1112-2, ORUS 1117-11 and ORUS 1122-1 will be planted in grower trials as soon as plants are available. `Chandler' blueberry was released in 1995 as a fresh market, local sales cultivar. `Chanticleer' a 1997 release from New Jersey, does not perform well in Oregon. G-224 will be propagated for grower trials. ORUS 2078 raspberry will be released based on performance in regional trials.
