Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Aspergillus tamarii and closely related fungi from Aspergillus sect. Flavi were isolated from Japanese tea-field soils. One of the A. tamarii isolates produced aflatoxin B1 and B2 and cyclopiazonic acid, which is not typical metabolite production for A. tamarii. Other isolates produced aflatoxins or cyclopiazonic acid as expected based on strain identification. DNA sequences were obtained from the ITS and large subunit rDNA for some strains, in order to verify the species identifications. From the DNA analysis of these fungi, one of the aflatoxigenic strains, which had earlier been identified as A. tamarii, was found to be more closely related to strains of A. caelatus which B. Horn described as a new species in 1997. Some other isolates initially identified as either A. tamarii or A. parasiticus also were re- identified by morphological and DNA analysis as A. caelatus strains. Most of the isolates identified as A. tamarii produced cyclopiazonic acid and kojic acid but none of the isolates identified as A. caelatus produced detectable amounts of cyclopiazonic acid. Morphological and chemical differences, as well as DNA sequence differences, between A. tamarii and A. caelatus are small but consistent.
