Technical Abstract: As the in-house research arm of the USDA, The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) develops new knowledge to solve agricultural problems of broad scope and high national priority. The activities of the ARS serve to meet the nutritional needs of the American consumer, sustain a viable food and agricultural economy and to maintain a quality environment and natural resource base. With approximately 2000 scientists and 7000 total employees, the Agency conducts research at over 100 locations both in the U.S. and abroad. The Agricultural Research Service maintains a mixed portfolio of interdisciplinary science covering the fundamental to applied research continuum. This productive mixture creates ideas and solutions to technical problems identified during industry, trade and interest group interactions. The Agency conducts basic plant science research, traditional breeding and genetic engineering programs to improve the functionality and economics of important crops. Traditional processing and newer technologies using microorganisms and/or their enzymes are being developed to transform raw agricultural materials (starch, proteins and oils) to commercially valuable products. An effective technology transfer program ensures that ARS developments are commercialized to benefit the public. Specific examples of ARS research programs and their progress will be presented.
