Technical Abstract: This is a review on the effects of trichothecene mycotoxins on food producing animals. Major mycotoxins discussed include T-2 toxin, diacetoxyscirpenol, and deoxynivalenol. Diagnosis of intoxication is based on clinical signs and signs of mold prevalence or clinical history or potential of fungal invasion of feed or feedstuffs. State-of-the-art diagnostic techniques include ELISA based field diagnositic kits for testing of feed sources. Treatment for mycotoxin toxicoses is usually limited to supportive therapy for clinical syndromes and removal of incriminated feed. Prevention is centered on adequate testing of feedstuffs prior to feed formulation, purchase of mycotoxin-free feeds and ingredients, and proper harvest, handling, and storage of feedstuffs.
