Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Recently, several avian leukosis viruses (ALVs) were isolated from broiler breeder flocks experiencing a relatively high incidence of myeloid leukosis. Antigenic characterization of one of these isolates termed ADOL- Hc1 suggested that it is related to strain HPRS-103, the prototype of the novel subgroup J ALV (ALV-J). In several broiler breeder flocks, the incidence of virus isolation varied from 16% to 48%, whereas the incidence of antibody to ADOL-Hc1 varied from 72% to 87%. Further, nucleotide sequence comparisons between the prototype HPRS-103 strain and ADOL-Hc1 ALV revealed only two base substitutions in the E element. The data indicate the isolation and widespread infection of an ALV-J like virus in broiler breeder flocks in the United States.
