Technical Abstract: Grower demand resulted in commercial availability of Guardian peach rootstock before all root-knot nematode testing was completed. Preliminary reports suggested that Guardian rootstock was resistant to Meloidogyne spp. Guardian-USDA and Guardian-Clemson seed sources were tested for their susceptibility to M. incognita and M. javanica. Host suitability of the two Guardian seed sources as compared to Lovell (susceptible) and Nemaguard (resistant) peach was determined after 110 days. Both Guardian commercial seed sources are poor hosts to the populations of M. incognita and M. javanica tested. Reproduction by M. incognita and M. javanica, as indicated by number of eggs and number of eggs per egg mass, was less on plants from both Guardian sources as compared to Lovell. Root penetration studies indicate that M. incognita J2's penetrate Guardian roots, root galls form, but the majority of the nematodes do not complete their life cycle.
