Technical Abstract: This chapter surveys the previous research work on the biosynthesis of flavonoids in citrus tissues and citrus cell culture. Much of the biosynthetic pathway has been worked out, but research has only just started on the regulation of the accumulation of these compounds in citrus species. It has been difficult to carefully examine the bioregulation in citrus species due to a lack of good model cell culture system. Most established cell lines derived from Citrus do not accumulate flavonoids. Some cell lines have been examined for their ability to produce flavonoid enzymes, and two cell lines have been reported to accumulate flavonoids. From these model studies, it may be possible to develop simple protocols for the biomodulation of flavonoid accumulation in developing plants and fruits. This review discusses research on flavonoid biosynthesis in plants in general, in citrus species specifically with 117 references.
