Title: Properties of Owner-Sampler and Other Records Formerly Excluded from National Genetic Evaluations

Technical Abstract: In 1997, records from owner-sampler and other test plans formerly not used in national genetic evaluations were included if the records had milk component data; were obtained from quality certified meters, laboratories, and data processing methods; and passed additional edits. From December 1995 through May 1996, 9926 milk-only records and 78,176 records from other plans not formerly used were received by USDA for 1st lactation Holstein cows. Standardized means (standard deviations) were 9031 kg (1330 kg) for milk-only records, 9333 kg (1225 kg) for other records formerly not used, and 9787 (1356 kg) for records used for 1995 national evaluations. Sires were identified for 30% of milk-only records, 45% of other records formerly not used, and 73% of traditionally used records. Of those sire-identified records, 36% of milk-only records, 67% of other records not formerly used, and 95% of traditionally used records passed routine edits. Additional edits for records formerly not used were percentage of herd with complete identification data, percentage of recorded milk that was shipped, and number of outliers. Of the sire- identified records not formerly used that passed routine edits and included component data, only 58% passed additional edits. Regression of 1st lactation milk yield on sire's latest predicted transmitting ability for milk was expected to be 1.0 and equalled .53 for milk-only records, .73 for other records not formerly used, .76 for other records after additional editing, and 1.02 for traditionally used records. Within herd- year, corresponding squared correlation of sire with 1st lactation yield was .7, 1.5, 1.7, and 2.8%. Additional edits improved data quality only slightly and removed many records.
