Interpretive Summary: Cotton produces a variety of volatile compounds that affect the behavior of herbivores, pathogens, and beneficial insects. Cottons known to be resistant to pathogens and insects were screened for unusual chemicals that may be used as breeding markers. Three new compounds were identified (i.e. 12-hydroxy-beta-caryophyllene, beta-caryophyllene-12-acetate, and beta-caryophyllene-4,5-oxide-12-acetate) were identified that may be useful in this regard.
Technical Abstract: 12-Hydroxy-beta-caryophyllene, beta-caryophyllene-12-acetate, and beta- caryophyllene-4,5-oxide-12-acetate were purified from the essential oil of the wild cottons Gossypium armourianum, Gossypium harknessii, and Gossypium turneri by preparative gas chromatography and identified using NMR and mass spectroscopy. In chloroform solution, the first two compounds exist as two slowly interconverting conformers as does beta-caryophyllene.
