Interpretive Summary: A mathematical equation has been developed to estimate soil erosion by wind. The equation was tested against field measurements of erosion. This equation will permit accurate estimates of soil erosion for most any field, cropping, or management systems in the country.

Technical Abstract: A Single Event Erosion Model (SEEM) has been developed and calibrated with erosion data. Estimates of event wind erosion losses with simple inputs for soil, crop, field, and climatic conditions are possible with SEEM. Equations were developed for maximum mass transport and critical field length. Using inputs from wind velocity, soil and residue conditions. Maximum transport of 1231 Kg/m-width was measured at Elkhart, Kansas. With the transport and critical field length coefficients in a sigmoid equation, average soil loss can be computed for any field. Estimates of soil loss from 2.6 ha circular fields with SEEM ranged from 0.03 to 7.43 and measured values range from 0.015 to 7.81 Kg/m^2. Calculated soil losses were correlated with measured losses for independent sites and storms (R^2=0.98) .
