Title: 1995 ATTAPULGUS MODERATE CHILLING PEACH AND NECTARINE BREEDING AND EVALUATION PROGRAM

Interpretive Summary: Only marginally adapted varieties are currently available for use in the Coastal Plains peach production region of the southeastern United States. The purpose of this program is to breed new varieties specifically adapted to this region's climate and needs and to identify varieties from other programs that can be utilized by this industry. Principal needs include more appropriate winter chilling requirements in combination with improved shape, firmness and eating quality. Evaluations are performed at the University of Georgia Research Station in Attapulgus, GA near the main production areas of this industry in south Georgia. Promising selections include SG90-1N, SG90-4, SG90-6, SG91-5, SG91-7 and FL5-16W. The recently released Flordacrest, Aztecgold and Suncoast varieties appear to be superior to current commercial utilized cultivars in their season.
