Technical Abstract: Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a member of a group of diseases called the transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). An outbreak of BSE, which began in 1985, has caused severe financial loss to the cattle and related industries of Great Britain and, to a lesser extent, the European continent countries. In this paper, I briefly review the TSEs of animals and humans, the risk of BSE occurring in the United States and wor that is being done to evaluate and reduce the risk.
