Technical Abstract:
Methyl Bromide is a commonly used pre-plant soil fumigant. By present legislation, it will not be available in the U.S. after 2001. In 1995, the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, with the support of the Crop Protection Coalition, initiated a five-year Cropping Systems Project to demonstrate alternatives to Methyl Bromide for pre-plant soil fumigation. The purpose of the project is to assemble, test, and demonstrate, under California commercial grower conditions, packages of practices (cropping systems) for the production of strawberries and orchard and vine crops that provide practical, economical, and environmentally sound alternatives to present production methods that use methyl bromide, by 2001. The project is being carried out cooperatively by researchers and extension personnel from the various grower representative groups, the University of California (UC), and ARS.
