Technical Abstract: In facing the current fiscal restraints and limitations in land availability and manpower for germplasm preservation, it is critical for the repository to streamline and be able to do more with less. The process of verification of authenticity of collection, elimination of redundancy, and expansion of diversity can be enhanced. Enzyme electrophoresis is a simple, inexpensive and less time consuming tool for evaluation of germplasm, especially in tree crops which are clonally propagated. Isozyme fingerprinting helps in establishing the genetic identity of clonal material, in assessing the genetic diversity and classification of germplasm, and in patenting of clonal cultivars. Although the information presented was generated from a relatively small collection, especially the wild species and with limited passport information, this is an attempt to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the current collection, and to develop strategies for future collection.
