Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Tachykinins are members of a family of peptides demonstrated to act as neurohormones in mammals and invertebrates, including insects. In conjunction with their respective receptors, these peptide hormones have been implicated to be critical to a number of motor and sensory functions, particularly related to central and peripheral neuron activity and the contraction of smooth muscle. Using a DNA probe from a portion of a tachykinin-like peptide receptor from Drosophila melanogaster, a 4118 bp clone was purified and sequenced from a stable fly, Stomoxys calcitrans, cDNA library. The DNA clone codes for a protein which has very high amino acid similarity to the Drosophila receptor, particularly in putative membrane spanning regions of members of the receptor family which have been conserved between rat, human and Drosophila.
