Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: The disease now called porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) was first recognized in the United States in 1987. It subsequently spread throughout the world and today it is believed by many to be one of the most economically important diseases faced by the swine industries worldwide. Although vaccines offer one of the best hopes for eventually controlling this costly disease, little is yet known about either their safety or efficacy, especially in regard to their use for the prevention of reproductive losses. In this manuscript we discuss our experiences with the development and evaluation of PRRS vaccines and give our interpretations as to their proper use and potential. Prevention of PRRS by vaccination will save the United States swine producers, and indirectly the United States consumers of pork and pork products, millions of dollars annually.
