Title: Near Infrared Analysis of Lesquerella for Oil, Gum and Other Quality Factors

Technical Abstract: A set of 56 samples of lesquerella seed were analyzed by Near Infrared Analysis on an Infratec Model 1255 instrument as whole seeds. The methods developed in the 850 to 1050 nm wavelength range were nondestructive and required about 0.5 g of seed. In the initial method development the yellow-colored seeds were clearly out of the calibration range for the other samples and were set aside for a different calibration. Of the remaining 40 seeds, 25 were used for the calibration and 15 for validation. All samples had been previously analyzed by established methods for oil, moisture, protein and gum content. NIR calibrations were developed for gum content with an R2 = 0.6 and for oil content with an R2 = 0.87. Other quality factors which may be amenable to NIR analysis are moisture, protein, glucosinolate and color. Results and progress will be presented for all of the quality factors.
