Technical Abstract:
Avian leukosis virus (ALV) and reticuloendotheliosis virus (REV) are the most common naturally occurring avian retroviruses associated with neoplastic disease conditions in domesticated poultry. ALV infects primarily chickens, whereas REV infects chickens, turkeys, and other avian species. In addition to causing tumors, both ALV and REV can reduce productivity and induce immunosuppression and other production problems in affected flocks. A neoplastic disease of turkeys termed lymphoproliferative disease (LPD) is caused by yet another avian retrovirus unrelated antigenically and genetically to ALV or REV (5). LPD has been described in turkey flocks in Europe and the Middle East, but not in the United States. This review provides a synopsis of the etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and control of the two most common retrovirus- induced neoplastic diseases in chickens and turkeys, namely avian leukosis and reticuloendotheliosis.
