Interpretive Summary: Desert landscapes are formed by unique processes, resulting in a few common characteristic soil types. The unique properties of these soils effect the construction of buildings and roads as well as agricultural production in desert areas.
Technical Abstract:
A series of soil related terms that have application to desert studies are defined. These definitions will be included in a comprehensive encyclopedia of deserts. Generally, the terms included in this manuscript cover the major soil types and the processes responsible for their formation in arid and semi-arid areas.
