Interpretive Summary:

Technical Abstract: Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is one of the most economically important diseases currently faced by the United States swine industry. In this proceedings paper we discuss the selection and subsequent treatment of samples collected for the diagnosis of PRRS, and describe the use and advantages of a recently developed method of collecting alveolar macrophages as a diagnostic sample for identification of PRRS virus. The dissemination of information relative to the diagnosis of PRRS will assist in the control of this costly disease and thus reduce its economic impact on the American swine produced and the American consumer.
