Technical Abstract: Crop salt-tolerance data are crucial in the management of salt-affected agronomic systems. Numerous field and laboratory experiments have been conducted over the years to obtain these data, often at great expense and effort. We have built a computerized salt-tolerance database relating experimental crop yield to average rootzone salinity and other parameters affecting crop growth. The database was developed with the relational database software Microsoft FoxPro for Windows and consisted of some 25 tables, including 5 translational or "look-up" tables, and 5 general information tables. The tables contain crop, soil, bibliographic, experiment, and yield information that can be accessed and displayed on-screen, printed or exported; analyzed by several phenomenologically-based salt-tolerance models; and graphed. The database management system also includes conversion equations so that salinity and yield data reported in different units from different experiments can be standardized and compared, thus providing a more comprehensive data set for individual crops or situations.
